I was able to get Windows 8.1 to recognize the PS3 controller, but not make it operational. In the top left corner of the window is a toggle that can be used to switch to Gamepad Mode (Controller Mode on PS5/PS4). They are built just like the PS3 controller and no need to worry about downloading software to recognize it. If you are going for a wired controller check out the Logitech F310 gamepad (15 bucks or so) or the wireless Logitech (40 bucks or so) ones that have the vibration function. You can go back and forth from controller to keyboard/mouse without a problem.
